How Often Should You Get Your Eyes Checked?

Feb 26, 2025

Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining good vision and overall eye health. But how often should you get your eyes checked? The answer depends on several factors, including your age, vision condition, and risk factors for eye diseases. In this guide, we’ll break down how frequently you should visit an eye doctor and why routine eye exams are so important.

Why Are Regular Eye Exams Important?

Many people assume they only need an eye exam when they notice vision problems, but regular checkups can detect issues early—even before symptoms appear. Eye exams can help:

Identify vision changes and update your prescription as needed.
Detect eye diseases early, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
Reveal overall health concerns like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can show early signs in the eyes.
Skipping routine eye exams may lead to undiagnosed conditions that could worsen over time, affecting both vision and overall health.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

👶 Children (0–17 years old)
First eye exam: Around 6 months old to check for early vision development issues.
Preschool (3–5 years old): At least one eye exam before starting school.
School-age (6–17 years old): Every 1–2 years, especially if they have vision problems or need glasses.
Children's eyesight is still developing, and undiagnosed vision problems can impact learning and coordination.

🧑 Adults (18–39 years old)
If you have no vision problems, get an exam every 2 years.
If you wear glasses or contacts, you should have an exam every 1–2 years to keep your prescription up to date.
If you experience frequent headaches, eye strain, or trouble focusing, schedule an exam sooner.
Since many adults spend long hours on screens, it's important to check for digital eye strain and early signs of eye conditions.

👓 Adults (40–64 years old)

Get a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years to monitor vision changes and early signs of age-related conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye diseases, annual eye exams are recommended.

👴 Seniors (65+ years old)
Annual eye exams are essential to monitor for age-related vision loss, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Seniors are at higher risk for eye diseases that can develop without noticeable symptoms, so regular checkups are crucial.

Signs You Need an Eye Exam Sooner

Even if you follow the general guidelines, you should schedule an eye exam immediately if you experience:
✅ Blurry vision or trouble focusing
✅ Frequent headaches or eye strain
✅ Difficulty seeing at night
✅ Double vision
✅ Flashes of light, floaters, or sudden vision changes
✅ Increased sensitivity to light

These symptoms could indicate an underlying vision problem that needs immediate attention.
