What to Do If Your Glasses Don't Fit

Jul 29, 2024

Finding the perfect pair of glasses is not just about the right prescription; it’s also about the perfect fit. Ill-fitting glasses can cause discomfort, headaches, and even impair your vision. If your glasses don't fit properly, don't worry. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to do to ensure your glasses fit perfectly.

Identify the Fit Issue

Before making any adjustments, it’s important to identify what exactly is wrong with the fit. Common issues include:

Slipping down the nose: This can be due to loose nose pads or wide frames.
Pinching the nose: Tight nose pads or frames can cause discomfort and leave marks.
Too tight on the temples: This can cause headaches and pressure behind the ears.
Crooked frames: Uneven frames can make your vision appear distorted.

Visit Your Optician

The best course of action if your glasses don’t fit is to visit your optician. They have the tools and expertise to make precise adjustments. Here’s what they might do:

Adjust the Nose Pads: For glasses that slip or pinch, adjusting the nose pads can make a significant difference.
Bend the Temples: If the temples are too tight or loose, your optician can bend them to fit your head shape better.
Align the Frames: If your glasses sit crookedly, your optician can straighten them for you.

DIY Adjustments

If it is not convenient to go to an optician, or if you purchased it from an online store, you can try some DIY adjustments at home. Here’s how:

For Metal Frames: You can gently bend the frames with your hands. Use caution to avoid breaking them. Hold the frame near the lens and make small adjustments.
For Plastic Frames: Use warm water or a hairdryer to heat the plastic slightly, making it more pliable. Once warm, you can make small adjustments.
Note: Be very cautious with DIY adjustments. Applying too much force can break the frames.

How to fix uneven temples?

If one temple arm on your glasses is higher than the other, it can lead to an uneven fit, causing discomfort and misalignment when you wear them. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to adjust this at home:

Identify the Higher Side: Place your glasses on a flat, level surface like a table. Make sure the arms (temples) are resting on the surface. Notice which side is higher or doesn’t touch the table evenly.

Apply Gentle Pressure: Hold the glasses by the bridge, the part connecting the two lenses, to keep them steady. With your other hand, gently push down on the higher temple arm, or lift the lower side. Apply only a small amount of pressure at a time and check the alignment frequently to avoid over-bending.

Adjust the Nose Pads (if applicable): If your glasses have adjustable nose pads, slight adjustments can also help correct height. Use your fingers or a small tool to angle the nose pads slightly downwards on the side where the temple is higher, and check to see if this balances the fit.

Heat Plastic Frames (If Necessary): For plastic frames, warming them slightly can make adjustments easier. Use a hairdryer to warm the temple arm that needs adjustment for a few seconds, being careful not to overheat. Then, apply gentle pressure to adjust the height.

Check the Fit: After each adjustment, try your glasses on and ensure they sit evenly on your face. Adjustments may need to be fine-tuned until both sides are level.

If you're unable to adjust them correctly or are uncomfortable with these steps, consider visiting an optician for a professional adjustment.

Use Anti-Slip Accessories

There are several accessories available that can help improve the fit of your glasses:

Nose Pads: Stick-on nose pads can help prevent glasses from slipping.
Temple Grips: These grips can be attached to the temple arms to make them fit more securely behind the ears.
Head Straps: Elastic straps can keep your glasses in place, especially useful for sports and physical activities.

Consider a Different Frame

If you’ve tried all adjustments and your glasses still don’t fit, it might be time to consider a different frame. Look for frames that:

Match Your Face Shape: Different frame styles suit different face shapes. Ensure the frame size is appropriate for your face.
Have Adjustable Features: Some frames come with adjustable nose pads and flexible temples, making them easier to customize for a perfect fit.

By addressing fit issues promptly, you can enjoy clear vision and comfortable wear, ensuring that your glasses are a perfect companion for your daily life.
