What is Contact Solution and Why is it Essential for Your Contacts?

Nov 06, 2024

If you wear contact lenses, you're probably familiar with the need for contact solution, a vital product for lens maintenance. But what exactly is contact solution, and why is it so important for keeping your lenses—and eyes—healthy? In this blog, we’ll dive into what contact solution is, the different types available, and why it should be a part of your daily eye care routine.

What is Contact Solution?

Contact solution is a liquid used to clean, disinfect, and store contact lenses. It is designed to keep your lenses free from bacteria, dust, and other harmful particles while also maintaining their moisture balance. Whether you wear soft, rigid gas permeable (RGP), or hybrid lenses, contact solution is a must-have to ensure your lenses are safe, comfortable, and in good condition.

Types of Contact Solution

There are a few different types of contact solution, each tailored to specific needs:

Multi-purpose Solution
The most common type, multi-purpose solutions, can be used for cleaning, rinsing, disinfecting, and storing your lenses. These are convenient and versatile, often suitable for most types of soft contact lenses.

Saline Solution
Saline solution is a simple saltwater solution used primarily for rinsing and storing lenses. It doesn’t provide disinfection, so it’s typically used in combination with another cleaning and disinfecting solution.

Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
This solution is used for deep cleaning and disinfecting. Hydrogen peroxide solutions are great for individuals with sensitive eyes or those who wear their contacts for extended periods. These solutions require a neutralizing step to avoid irritation.

Daily Cleaner
This solution is designed for cleaning your lenses, but it’s not a substitute for disinfecting solutions. It’s typically used for removing debris, protein deposits, and other residues after your lenses are removed from your eyes.

Why is Contact Solution Important?

Prevents Eye Infections
Dirty or improperly stored contact lenses can harbor bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. Contact solution disinfects your lenses to kill these harmful microorganisms, reducing the risk of eye infections and discomfort.

Keeps Lenses Moist
Lenses, especially soft contacts, can dry out if left exposed to the air. Contact solution ensures that your lenses stay hydrated and comfortable while in storage. Without it, your lenses may become stiff and difficult to wear.

Removes Protein and Debris
Over time, proteins and lipids from your tears can accumulate on the surface of your contact lenses. Regular cleaning with contact solution helps remove these deposits, ensuring that your lenses remain clear and comfortable to wear.

Improves Comfort
Using the right solution can also improve comfort for contact lens wearers. It helps maintain the natural moisture balance of your eyes and lenses, which reduces dryness and irritation.

How to Use Contact Solution Correctly

Using contact solution is straightforward, but proper technique is crucial to ensure your lenses are clean and safe to wear. Here’s how to use it effectively:

Wash your hands before touching your lenses.
Clean and rub each lens with the solution to remove dirt or debris, then rinse it thoroughly.
Store your lenses in a clean contact lens case, filled with fresh solution. Never reuse solution from a previous day.
Replace your solution daily to maintain the cleanliness and effectiveness of your lens storage.
