How to Travel with Glasses: Tips for Long Flights and Outdoor Adventures

Jan 12, 2025

Traveling with glasses can be a hassle if you’re unprepared. Whether you’re embarking on a long flight or planning outdoor adventures, having the right strategies in place ensures your glasses remain safe and your vision stays clear. Here are some essential tips to help you travel smartly with your eyewear.

1. Pack a Glasses Case

Always travel with a sturdy, hard-shell glasses case. It protects your glasses from accidental damage during turbulence or while being stashed in a backpack. Soft cases may be more compact but don’t provide the same level of protection.

2. Bring a Spare Pair

A backup pair of glasses is a lifesaver if your primary pair gets lost or damaged. This is especially crucial for those with strong prescriptions or specialized lenses, which can’t be replaced easily on the go.

3. Use a Microfiber Cloth and Cleaning Solution

Smudges, dust, and sweat can accumulate during travel. Carry a microfiber cloth and a travel-sized cleaning solution to keep your lenses spotless. Avoid using your shirt or tissue, which might scratch the lenses.

4. Invest in an Anti-Fog Coating

For long flights, temperature changes can fog up your glasses. Anti-fog coatings or sprays are especially helpful in humid climates or when transitioning between air-conditioned spaces and the outdoors.

5. Secure Your Glasses on Outdoor Adventures

If you’re planning hikes, biking, or water sports, consider a glasses strap or retainer. These keep your glasses secure, even during vigorous activities. For extra protection, choose impact-resistant lenses.

6. Protect Against UV Rays

For sunny outdoor adventures, prescription sunglasses or clip-on shades are essential. They protect your eyes from harmful UV rays while enhancing your comfort and visibility.

7. Know Your Prescription

Carry a copy of your prescription, especially if you’re traveling abroad. This allows you to order replacement glasses if needed.

8. Avoid Overpacking Your Carry-On

When flying, avoid overstuffing your carry-on bag to prevent your glasses from being crushed. Place the glasses case in an easily accessible pocket to retrieve it without rummaging through your luggage.

9. Consider Travel Insurance for Glasses

If you’re traveling with expensive glasses, check if your travel insurance covers eyewear. Some policies provide reimbursement if your glasses are lost or damaged.

10. Travel-Friendly Contact Lens Alternatives

If you use contact lenses, pack enough supplies, including solution and a case. For extended adventures, daily disposable lenses might be a more convenient option.
