How to Measure Eyeglasses Size: A Step-by-Step Guide

Aug 13, 2024

When it comes to finding the perfect pair of eyeglasses, getting the right size is crucial for comfort and style. Eyeglasses that are too big or too small can cause discomfort and may not look as good as they should. Here's a guide on how to measure eyeglasses size accurately to ensure a perfect fit.

Understanding the Eyeglasses Measurements

Eyeglasses sizes are typically represented by five key measurements: lens width, lens height, bridge width, temple length, and frame width.

Lens Width: The horizontal width of each lens at its widest point, usually measured in millimeters. It's typically between 40-62 mm.
Lens Height: The vertical height of the lens at its tallest point. This measurement is especially important for bifocals or progressive lenses.
Bridge Width: The distance between the two lenses, measured across the bridge of the nose. It usually ranges from 14-24 mm.
Temple Length: The length of the arm of the glasses, from the hinge to the end tip, usually between 120-150 mm.
Frame Width: The overall width of the front of the eyeglasses, from one end to the other, including the outer edges of the lenses and the bridge. This is a critical measurement for ensuring the glasses fit your face comfortably.

How to Measure Your Glasses Frame Size

1. To measure the lens width:

Lay the glasses on a flat surface.
Place a ruler or measuring tape horizontally across the widest part of one lens.
Record the measurement in millimeters.

2. To measure the lens height:

Place the glasses on a flat surface.
Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure from the top of the lens to the bottom at the tallest point.
Record this measurement in millimeters.

This measurement is particularly important if you need lenses with specific focal points, such as bifocals or progressives.

3. Measuring the Bridge Width:

Locate the part of the frame that rests on your nose.
Use a ruler to measure the distance between the inner edges of the lenses where the bridge sits.
Record this measurement in millimeters.

4. To measure the temple length:

Start at the hinge that connects the temple arm to the front of the frame.
Measure along the arm to the point where it curves behind the ear.
Continue measuring to the very end of the arm.
Record this total length in millimeters.

5. To measure the frame width:

Place the glasses on a flat surface.
Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure horizontally from the outer edge of one lens to the outer edge of the other lens, including the bridge.
Record this measurement in millimeters.

This measurement is vital to ensure that the glasses fit well on your face without being too tight or too loose.

Find Your Size on Frames

Locate the Size Markings: Most eyeglasses have size markings on the inside of the temple arm. Look for three numbers printed there. These typically represent the lens width, bridge width, and temple length, respectively. For example, as 55-16-140.

Additional Tips for the Perfect Fit

Face Shape: Consider your face shape when selecting frame sizes. Round faces often look great with rectangular frames, while square faces may prefer rounded or oval lenses.

Frame Material: Some materials, like acetate, can be adjusted slightly for a better fit. Metal frames often have adjustable nose pads, which can help with bridge width.
