How to Clean Your Sunglasses Without Damaging the Coating

Aug 25, 2025

Your sunglasses aren’t just a fashion accessory—they’re a shield against harmful UV rays and glare. But over time, dust, fingerprints, saltwater, and even sunscreen can build up on the lenses, making them look cloudy and uncomfortable to wear. Cleaning them the wrong way can actually scratch the lenses or strip away protective coatings like UV protection, polarization, or anti-reflective layers.

Why Gentle Cleaning Matters

Most high-quality sunglasses today—like those from Fondvue—come with specialized coatings:

UV400+ protection to block harmful rays

Polarized filters to reduce glare

Anti-reflective (AR) coatings for sharper vision

Scratch-resistant layers to extend durability

Using the wrong cleaning method—such as paper towels, clothing, or harsh chemicals—can strip or scratch these coatings. That’s why proper cleaning is essential for keeping your lenses safe and effective.

The Right Way to Clean Your Sunglasses

Here’s a safe and effective cleaning routine you can follow at home:

✅ Step 1: Rinse with Lukewarm Water

Start by rinsing your sunglasses under a gentle stream of lukewarm water. This helps remove dust and grit that could scratch the lenses during cleaning.

✅ Step 2: Use a Mild Lens Cleaner or Dish Soap

Apply a drop of mild, lotion-free dish soap to your fingertips and gently rub both sides of the lenses and frames. If you prefer, use a specialized lens cleaning spray designed for coated lenses.

✅ Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse away all traces of soap with lukewarm water. Make sure no residue remains, as it can leave streaks or spots.

✅ Step 4: Dry with a Microfiber Cloth

Pat dry with a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid tissues, paper towels, or clothing—they can scratch the surface.

✅ Step 5: Buff for Clarity

Gently polish the lenses with the microfiber cloth to remove any remaining smudges and restore clarity.

What Not to Use on Your Sunglasses

To protect the lens coatings, avoid cleaning your sunglasses with:

❌ Paper towels or napkins – They contain wood fibers that can scratch coatings.

❌ Shirts or clothing – Fabric may trap dust particles that act like sandpaper.

❌ Household cleaners – Window cleaners, vinegar, or bleach can strip away UV and AR coatings.

❌ Hot water – Extreme heat can damage lens coatings and warp frames.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to clean your sunglasses without damaging the coating is the key to preserving their clarity and protection. With the right care, your sunglasses will not only look brand new but also continue to shield your eyes from harmful rays and glare.
