The Truth About Ultraviolet Index (UVI): What Number Is Dangerous?

Oct 28, 2025

We all know that sunlight can be both helpful and harmful. It provides Vitamin D and boosts our mood — but too much exposure can damage our eyes and skin. That’s why the Ultraviolet Index (UVI) exists. It tells us how strong the UV radiation is at any given moment.

But what do those numbers actually mean? And at what point does UV exposure become dangerous? At Fondvue Glasses, we want you to understand UVI so you can protect your eyes wisely, especially when spending time outdoors.

What Is the Ultraviolet Index (UVI)?

The UVI is a worldwide standard that measures the level of UV radiation from the sun. The scale usually ranges from 0 to 11+, with higher numbers meaning a greater risk of skin and eye damage.

You’ll often see the UVI in weather apps or forecasts — but most people ignore it because they don’t understand what the numbers mean.

What Numbers Are Safe — and What Numbers Are Dangerous?

A low UVI, such as 0–2, means minimal UV radiation. You can usually stay outdoors safely with little to no protection.

Once the index reaches 3 or above, UV rays become strong enough to cause harm. The higher the number, the faster damage can occur.

Even on cloudy days, UV radiation can remain high because UV rays can pass through clouds. That means sunglasses are important year-round — not only in the summer.

Why UVI Matters for Your Eyes

Your eyes are one of the most sensitive organs to UV exposure. Long-term or intense exposure increases the risk of:

Photokeratitis (sunburned eyes)

Cataracts

Macular degeneration

Cancer around the eyelids

Permanent vision loss

Children are especially vulnerable, as their lenses allow more UV to reach the retina.

Monitoring UVI helps you decide when to take extra precautions, like wearing UV400 sunglasses or staying in the shade.

When Should You Wear UV Protection?

The answer: anytime UVI is 3 or above.

This is when UV rays can cause visible and invisible damage — even if you don’t feel the effects immediately. Pain or discomfort often comes after the harm has already occurred.

So whether you’re on a beach vacation or just walking to work, it’s crucial to protect your eyes once the UVI rises.

How Fondvue Helps Protect Your Eyes

All sunglasses at Fondvue Glasses include:

UV400+ protection blocking 100% UVA and UVB rays

Optional polarized lenses to reduce glare

Premium optical materials for long-term comfort

Fashion-forward designs suitable for every lifestyle

You will never have to choose between safety and style — you can enjoy both.

Final Thoughts

The Ultraviolet Index is more than just a number — it’s a health warning.

UVI 0–2: Low risk

UVI 3+: Eye and skin protection required

UVI 8+: Very high danger in minutes

No matter the season, your eyes deserve consistent UV protection.
