How to Protect Your Eyes While at the Beach or on Snow

Aug 11, 2025

When you’re enjoying the great outdoors—whether it’s a relaxing day on the beach or an exciting snow adventure—don’t forget to protect one of your most valuable assets: your eyes. Exposure to UV rays from the sun can cause significant damage, and the glare from sand or snow can be especially harmful to your vision.

In this blog, we’ll share how to protect your eyes while at the beach or on the snow, and why investing in the right sunglasses is key to keeping your vision clear and healthy.

1. Why UV Protection is Crucial for Your Eyes

When you're outdoors, your eyes are constantly exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can penetrate the atmosphere, causing long-term damage to your eyes, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and even skin cancer around the eyes. At the beach or on the snow, the risk is even higher due to the reflective surfaces of water, sand, and snow.

For example, snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, making it one of the most dangerous environments for your eyes. Similarly, sand at the beach can reflect around 25% of UV rays. That’s why it’s critical to wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection when spending time in these areas.

2. The Best Lenses for Beach and Snow Activities

🏖️ Beach: Polarized and UV-Blocking Lenses
When you’re at the beach, glare from the water can be intense. Polarized lenses are your best friend here. They cut out the glare from the ocean and wet surfaces, giving you clearer vision and less eye strain. Additionally, gradient tints can be useful for those who want to shield their eyes from the direct sunlight above while still maintaining visibility of the sand and surroundings.

❄️ Snow: High-Contrast Lenses
Snow can be blinding, especially in sunny weather. The glare from snow is often more intense than from any other surface, so you’ll need eyewear that provides optimal protection and contrast. Yellow or amber lenses are excellent for snow, as they enhance contrast, making it easier to see the terrain and improve depth perception. This is particularly important for skiers, snowboarders, and winter hikers.

3. Key Features to Look for in Sunglasses for Beach and Snow

When choosing sunglasses for these environments, keep these essential features in mind:

✅ Polarization

As mentioned, polarized lenses are a must-have for reducing glare from reflective surfaces like water or snow. They help you see more clearly and reduce squinting, which can cause headaches and fatigue over time.

✅ UV400+ protection

This is the standard for effective UV protection. Sunglasses with UV400 lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, offering maximum protection.

✅ High-Impact Resistance
Both the beach and snow offer environments where accidents can happen. Look for sunglasses with durable, impact-resistant lenses to protect your eyes from potential debris or falls.

✅ Comfortable and Secure Fit
When you're active on the beach or in the snow, comfort and security are key. Opt for lightweight frames with non-slip nose pads and temples to ensure your sunglasses stay in place during high-movement activities.

4. Additional Tips for Eye Protection

Wear a Hat: In addition to sunglasses, wearing a wide-brimmed hat can help protect your eyes from direct sunlight and reduce glare.

Reapply Sunscreen: Don’t forget to apply sunscreen around your eyes to prevent sunburn and skin damage. Even when wearing sunglasses, the area around your eyes can still burn.

Avoid Staring at Bright Reflections: Always try to look away from intense reflections like the sun’s glare off the water or snow to reduce strain on your eyes.

Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to dry, irritated eyes, especially in hot or cold environments. Keep a water bottle nearby and hydrate frequently.
